BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Devyn Terry tossed a complete-game and allowed just one earned run on three hits to lead the Gardner-Webb softball team to a 6-2 victory over Presbyterian, as it split a Big South doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Brinkley Softball stadium.
Presbyterian (20-16, 6-4 BSC) opened the day taking game one, 4-0 behind Sydney Seigler's ninth win of the season, and the Runnin' Bulldogs (17-18, 3-5 BSC) captured game two, as Devyn Terry struck out six over seven innings to pick up her third victory.
Kaylee Wacaster paced the GWU offense going 3-for-7 on the afternoon, with a run and nabbed her 12th stolen bases of the season. Callie Thornton also had a productive day at the plate knocking in her 10th and 11th RBI of the season, while Rachel Cumiskey rocketed a two-run shot on to the roof of the Brinkley Softball Practice Facility, for her fourth home run of the season.
Game 1- GWU 0, PC 4
Seigler was great on the hill for the Blue Hose to open the day, giving up just three hits to the Runnin' Bulldogs and struck out 10.
Mackenzie Thompson also tossed a complete-game for GWU in the loss. The junior allowed three earned runs on 11 hits and tossed a season-high 129 pitches.
The Blue Hose jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring a run on three hits and stranding two baserunners.
Gardner-Webb had a chance to tie the game in the second, as the bases were loaded with Thornton at bat, but Seigler proved to be too much on the mound, as she struck out the freshman to escape the jam.
Presbyterian tacked on two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth and went on to take game one, 4-0.
Game 2- GWU 6, PC 2
Wacaster tallied all three of her hits in game two and Cumiskey hit a two-run first inning home run, as GWU completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Terry threw one of her best games of the season, allowing just three hits and set a new season-high with 101 pitches in the victory.
The Blue Hose took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but in the bottom of the inning, GWU scored six runs on six hits to take the lead. Cumiskey hit a two-run home run, scoring Wacaster, and later in the inning, Megan Gibbons reached first on an error by PC, which scored Gomes on the play. Thornton drove home Gibbons and Harris with a two-RBI single and Wacaster drove in Champion for the sixth and final run of the inning.
PC scored a run in the fifth, but Terry allowed just one hit over the final six innings of play to send GWU to the 6-2 victory.
Gardner-Webb takes to the road this weekend, for a three-game series against Radford. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at one, and a single game Sunday, which is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
