Gardner-Webb Softball Falls In Road Matchup At Radford

RADFORD, Va.- The Gardner-Webb softball team fell 8-0 to Radford, in a Big South Conference matchup on Friday evening at the RU Softball Stadium.
Abby Morrow tossed a complete-game two hit shutout and struck out five to pick up her 12th victory of the season for the Highlanders, while Devyn Terry struck out two over 5.2 innings, and allowed three earned runs in the loss for GWU.
Jill Blank and Amanda Gomes both had singles for GWU, while Beck Mantel and Marissa Yow both recorded two hits to lead the Highlanders at the plate.
Both of GWU's hits came in the top of the first, as Blank reached on a one-out single to the shortstop and Gomes singled down the right field line with two outs, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs runners on first and third with two outs. However, Morrow struck out Harris to escape the jam.
Mantel smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to give RU the lead, which they would continue to hold until the fifth inning, when the home side added five runs to increase their lead to 7-0.
Yow doubled to right center in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving RU the 8-0 victory. Mantel reached base on a double earlier in the inning.
The two teams will be back in action on Sunday, as they will play a doubleheader that is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
