MONROE – Gardner-Webb rising senior Chris Jones fired a second-round 65 on Wednesday to take the final qualifying spot at the U.S. Amateur Championship sectional qualifier.
The two-day event was hosted by Monroe Country Club (6,725 yards)
Jones (Charlotte, N.C.) shot a round of 71 on Tuesday and heated up on the final day to finish just two strokes (-8) off the lead. He was tied with Alejandro Villasana after 36 holes – and came through with a clutch birdie putt on the second playoff hole to clinch the final berth.
Jones recorded six birdies on Wednesday, sinking another clutch putt to birdie the 18th hole and force a playoff. He shot a sizzling 31 on the front nine, with birdies on the third, fourth and eighth – and an eagle on the 467-yard sixth hole.
Jones had only three bogeys over two days and was a strong minus-6 on Par 5 holes for the tournament.
John Freeman and Jeremy Grab took first and second at the tournament and will join Jones at the United States Amateur Championship on August 15-21 in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Oakland Hills Country Club will serve as the host course. For more information on the tournament visit the USGA official site here.
