Men's Tennis Shows Well at ITA Regional

DURHAM, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team traveled to Duke University this weekend to take place on the ITA Regionals. Overall, the Runnin' Bulldogs showed well as they collected six wins, competing in multiple events. The tournament featured 22 different schools from the Southeast Regioal.
 
Junior, Maximilan Scholl, continued his impressive fall campaign as the 17-seed in the tournament collecting three wins in Singles. On Friday, Scholl defeated Javier Renones of ECU 7-5, and 6-1 in the opening round. In the second round, Scholl competed against Zak Talic of Coastal Carolina and gathered the win in two sets with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory.
 
Saturday, Scholl continued his fight in the Singles bracket as he defeated 12-seed, Josh Peck of UNC 6-3, and 7-6(5). Finally in the third round, the 1-seed Nico Alvarez of Duke, a top 15 player in the country defeated Scholl 6-2, 6-1.
 
Head coach Mike Griffith was very pleased with Scholl's performance stating, "Max did what he does best - wins! To make the final 16 shows he is one of the best players in college tennis."
 
Millen Hurrion also impressed this weekend as he defeated Anu Kodali, the 25-seed of UNC 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, Fohrs paired with fellow Runnin' Bulldog Adam Schmidt as the pair went 1-1, defeating Appalachian State's Milo Bargeron and Alex Pavokovich 7-5, 6-3.
 
Griffith stated he was very pleased with Hurrion's performance saying, "He can (really) play. We are a much better team with him in the top half of our lineup."
 
Johan Fohrs also gathered a win for Gardner-Webb this weekend as he defeated Javi Casasolas of Wofford 7-5, 6-1.
 
As far as the outlook on the season, Griffith proclaimed, "We just need to keep working hard and everything will work out the way we want."
 
Gardner-Webb is back in action on November 3-5, as they travel to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest.
