Women Outpace Campbell at ECU Invite, While Men Fall to Tough Competition

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's and women's swim team competed for a second straight day as they traveled to ECU this Saturday. On the women's side, Gardner-Webb topped Campbell 151-111 yet fell to both ECU (181-110) and William and Mary (171-91). The men squared off with ECU and William and Mary. ECU topped Gardner-Webb 200-94 while, while William and Mary swam past the 'Dawgs with a score of 213-49.
 
Following the meet, head coach Mike Simpson stated, "I am so proud of both teams today. The women avenged last night's 40-point loss to Campbell with an 80-point swing and a 40-point victory." Following last night's meet at Campbell, "they came in with a quiet determination to change last night's outcome, and did a fantastic job racing," continued Simpson.
 
On the men's side, "the men knew going into this weekend that their backs were against the wall. They fought hard and battled for two days, which will pay off later in the season" stated Simpson.
 
Bethany Leap and Jessi Snover had a strong showing today for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as they each captured event victories. Leap won the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:04.21, while Snover topped the competition in the 100 Yard Butterfly finishing with a time of 56.02.
 
Bethany Leap continued a strong weekend today, placing second in the 200 Yard Breaststroke in a time of 2:20.12. London Schumacher mirrored Leap's second place finish with a time of 5:06.64 in the 500 Yard Freestyle.
 
In a pair of third place finishes, the relay team of Lili Toth, Bethany Leap, Jessi Snover and Audrey Robinson completed the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:47.27. In the 400 Yard IM, Mary Traylor placed third with a time of 4:32.51 while Morgan Smith of William and Mary narrowly eclipsed Traylor by just .04 seconds.
 
After a strong showing yesterday for the Runnin' Bulldogs, Jordan Mintz had himself another fine day as he swam to a fourth and fifth place finishes in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (58.46) and the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:11.54), respectively.
 
Eli Coan and Cullen Fields both picked up a pair of fifth place finishes for Gardner-Webb this afternoon as well. In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Coan finished with a time of 21.80 in a tight field. Fields placed fifth in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 52.06.
 
Overall Simpson was complimentary of his team stating, "We are so proud of how they handled themselves and picked each other up."
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action on October 27, at 5:00 PM as they women face off with Georgia Southern and Liberty, while the men will race against Catawba College.
