BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fell this afternoon to conference opponent Campbell by a score of 1-0. Campbell has been strong this season in Big South play as they now stand at 5-1-1 in the conference.
Head coach
Mike Varga stated, "Campbell is always a tough place to play. They play with a lot of energy at home and I thought we matched that today. In the end, it was a set piece that got us. The ball hasn't been bouncing our way, but this team has shown tremendous resilience."
After remaining scoreless for nearly the whole first period, Campbell opened the scoring at the 44:33 mark as Anna Cam Brantley found the back of the net for the Camels. Taylor Koester was credited with the assist as she crossed the ball to the middle of the box allowing Brantley to deflect it in for a goal.
Despite Brantley's goal just before half, the Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities as they fell to the Camels. In the match, the Campbell defense limited Gardner-Webb to seven shots, with three on goal.
Bailey Hierholzer,
Kayla Curatolo and
Samuelle Grove each accounted for GWU's offensive output as they each recorded a shot on goal, but came up empty-handed.
The Campbell offense was persistent today as they managed to get off 16 shots in the match, with 11 shots on goal. Haley Thoma lead the way for CU as she had three shots on goal in 32 minutes of play. Shelby Denkert also recorded multiple shots on goal for Campbell with two.
Gardner-Webb goalkeeper
