BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime Tuesday night against UNC Asheville. The match was originally scheduled for September 27, but rescheduled for today as the Runnin' Bulldogs final regular season home match.
After a scoreless first half, Emma Houser of UNC Asheville put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 53
rd minute on a header from five yards out. Katie Tuorto earned the assist.
Minutes later,
Annie Ross retaliated on the Runnin' Bulldogs behalf as she found the back of the net at the 56:01 mark. Ross received the cross from
Samuelle Grove on the right side of the pitch and then pushed her shot beyond the Asheville 'keepers reach from six yards out.
UNC Asheville outpaced the Runnin' Bulldogs on offense as they posted 22 shots with 10 on goal in the match. Carolina Houser and Courtney Naber lead the way for UNCA recording three shots on goal in the match.
The Gardner-Webb offense accounted for 11 shots in the match by way of eight different Runnin' Bulldogs.
Samuelle Grove was the lone Runnin' Bulldog with multiple (2) shots on goal in the match. Grove also added an assist for Gardner-Webb on Ross' goal, and took several big shots in overtime but was unable to convert.
Keely Brown was strong in goal tonight for Gardner-Webb as she tallied nine saves in 110 minutes of play. Bryson Lee of Asheville recorded five saves between the posts on the night.
With tonight's loss, Asheville completes their season, falling out of contention for the Big South Conference tournament ending with a record of (6-10-2, 2-6-1 BSC). Gardner-Webb finishes regular season play at (4-11-3, 2-4-3 BSC).
Gardner-Webb will enter the conference tournament as the #7 seed facing off with #2 Liberty. The game will take place on Friday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 PM in Lynchburg, VA.
