BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's swim team topped Catawba College tonight by a score of 158.5 to 97.5, swimming to 10 first-place finishes.
Chase Mattingly lead the way winning three events, followed by
Jordan Mintz and
Zach Dingfield as they each collected two first-place finishes.
Head coach
Mike Simpson stated, "The men's team had a chance to swim some different events tonight, and there were some pleasant surprises. We experimented in quite a few places, and saw some grit and determination."
Mattingly collected his first victory of the evening as he swam to a first-place finish in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 9:58.75. Teammate, Will Anderson placed second in the event with a time of 10:19.51.
Mattingly would later go on to win the 200 Yard Butterfly by a two-second margin completing the race in 1:56.91. Gardner-Webb's
John O'Connell placed second coming in at 1:58.83.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle,
Zach Dingfield placed first with a time of 1:44.19. Teammates
Eli Coan and
Drew Peden came in third and fourth place with times of 1:47.20 and 1:54.93 respectfully.
Later, Dingfield would go on to place first in the 100 Yard Freestyle eclipsing the competition with a time of 47.26.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to show well as they raced to a one-two finish in the 200 Yard Backstroke as
Peter Wakeley gathered a first-place finish with a time of 1:57.98 followed by
Joshua Clarke who came in at 1:58.11.
Jordan Mintz gathered his first of two victories as he would win the 100 Yard Breaststroke in just 58.06. Mintz continued his strong start to the season as he later won the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.08, narrowly escaping GWU teammate,
Justin Conklin who finished with a time of 4:15.16.
In the 200 Yard Breaststroke,
Brendan Teeters outpaced competitors with a winning time of 2:13.99.
Gardner-Webb rounded out their first-place finishes with a one-two finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle as
Chase Mattingly raced to a 4:46.65 victory followed by
Cullen Fields with a time of 4:55.03.
The Runnin' Bulldogs also showed well in the 100 Yard Backstroke as they collected second and third place finishes by
Joshua Clarke (53.51) and
Peter Wakeley (53.71). Gatlin Saylors of Catawba won the event with a time of 53.40.
Gardner-Webb returns to the pool tomorrow to square off with Limestone College at 9:30 AM.
