BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fell to Winthrop 2-1, Wednesday evening in a Big South Conference match.
Following the match, head coach
Mike Varga claimed, "We started well today. We should have put in a second goal in the first half. But, give Winthrop credit, they battled and scored to gain the momentum."
The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board first as
Samuelle Grove found the back of the net at the 24:59 mark in the first period.
Kayla Curatolo delivered the cross which lead to a scramble in the box resulting in Grove's third goal of the season.
Winthrop responded in the 38
th minute as Natalie Royaards' shot was beyond reach of the Gardner-Webb goalkeeper
Keely Brown. Brianna Palmer was credited with the assist on the Eagles first goal of the night.
After remaining tied 1-1 for 34 minutes, Allie Thomas of Winthrop scored the deciding goal at the 72:31 mark as her header found the back of the net off of the Eagles throw in. Courtney McLeod recorded the assist on Thomas' goal.
Gardner-Webb tallied nine shots during the match.
Samuelle Grove led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs with three shots on goal.
Kayla Curatolo also added a shot on goal in the match for Gardner-Webb.
Winthrop countered GWU's offensive efforts as the Eagles posted 11 shots, with eight on goal.
Keely Brown recorded six saves between the posts for Gardner-Webb on the night. Winthrop goalkeeper, Ashlynn Harris tallied three saves. Each goalkeeper recorded 90 minutes of play.
Winthrop took eight corner kicks on the night, as Gardner-Webb was credited with three.
Varga stated, "This is where we see how tough we are. I trust this team to bounce back from a disappointing result tonight and be ready for a tough match on Saturday."
Following tonight's match, Gardner-Webb falls to (2-9-1, 0-2-1 BSC). Winthrop climbs to 4-6-1 on the year. The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, Oct. 7 as they travel to play Radford at 2:00 PM.
