CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team won three titles this past weekend at the 49ers Fall Invitational, posting a 20-8 overall record for the event.
Freshman
Millen Hurrion set the stage with his first round win over No. 1 seed Ryan Dickerson from Duke by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. Hurrion then followed up his opening round performance by making short work of Luca Weidenmann of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-2. In the A1 draw, Hurrion gathered a fourth place finish in the flight and finished the tournament at 5-2.
Junior
Maximilian Scholl continued his winning way as he teamed up with Hurrion as the pair won the A2 draw with wins over Wofford, Charlotte, and Vanderbilt in the finals. Scholl went 3-0 in singles, with straight set wins over No. 1 seed Boyden of UNC, Vidgren of UNCG and No. 4 seed Quiroz of Winthrop before falling in the finals to the No. 3 seed from Duke, 7-5, 6-0. Scholl finished the tournament with a 6-1 record.
Sophomore
Stefano Puga also went 6-1 over the weekend by dominating the field in the B1 draw to claim the Champions Crown. Puga defeated Logan Walker of UNCG, No. 3 seed Yash Parikh of Davidson, and Richmond's Joseph Nardini before defeating Sien Fenne of Charlotte in the finals, 6-3, 6-1. Puga also teamed up with teammate
Anthony Brennan to claim the B3 doubles draw over Wofford's duo of Schoen and Crawford, 6-3.
Head coach
Mike Griffith had this to say about the event, "We brought four players to the tournament and came away with three championships, as well as a second and fourth place finish. Our players impressed me. This is an easy group to coach. They are motivated, professional in their approach and obviously very talented."
Gardner-Webb concludes their fall schedule this weekend, November 3-5 as they travel to Wake Forest University.
