Gardner-Webb Men's Golf Takes 10th At 2017 Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Gardner-Webb shot a 54-hole score of 6-under par at UNC Finley Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday to finish 10th at the 2017 Tar Heel Intercollegiate against a very tough field.
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished four strokes behind UNC Greensboro and nine strokes in front of VCU for the tournament, which was played on the 7,242-yard (Par 72) Finley Golf Course. Host North Carolina captured the team title, shooting 49-under par for the event.
Freshman Patrick Wu continued his strong fall season, finishing in a tie for 20th individually to pace the Runnin' Bulldogs. Wu shot back-to-back rounds of 72 on Saturday and came through with a 68 on Sunday to finish at 212 over 54 holes. The Taipai, Taiwan, native carded six birdies on Sunday to finish on a roll.
Wu finished with 16 birdies over 54 holes, which ranked sixth in the field.
Steffen Smith, who is also in the midst of a very good fall season, shot 68 in Saturday's first round to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs through 18 holes. Smith had six birdies in that first round, hitting the turn with a 33 and finishing his back nine with a 35. Smith followed with a round of 69 later Saturday and finished at 219 for the tournament (tie-38th).
Jake Kennedy carded a 72 in Saturday's opening round and finished under par on Sunday with a 71 to tie for 47th individually. The veteran was at his best on the front nine Sunday, posting birdies on the second, sixth, seventh and eighth holes to finish with a 32 at the turn.
Aaron Thomas (78-70-72-220) tied for 49th and Jonathan Henry (77-77-71-225) tied for 65th individually for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action next week, traveling to Elon, N.C., on October 16-17 for the 2017 Elon Phoenix Invitational.
