CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Gardner-Webb picked up wins at 141, 157 and 184 pounds Friday night, but fell by a 30-11 score to Virginia in a non-conference dual.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-4) fell behind early, with the Cavaliers (1-2) picking up a pin at 125 and a tech fall at 133.
With his team trailing 11-0 out of the gate, freshman Denton Spencer went to work on his first career dual victory, blanking Sam Martino for a 4-0 decision. Virginia followed with a major decision at 149, but Gardner-Webb countered with another dominant performance at 157 pounds.
Redshirt junior
Tyler Marinelli continued to shine in early season action, rolling to an 18-1 tech fall win over Fred Green. The Jefferson, Ga., native has just one loss on the season – with that coming at the 2017 Hokie Open to a nationally-ranked opponent.
Another pin for the Cavaliers stretched the lead at 165 pounds, before
Christian Maroni fell by a tight, 9-7 score at 174.
Veteran
Cole Graves stepped onto the mat at 184 pounds and secured a 5-2 decision over Jack Walsh to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a boost.
The Cavaliers recovered, however, taking back-to-back decisions at 197 and 285 to seal the team win.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Sunday, traveling to Raleigh, N.C., for the always challenging Wolfpack Open.
