RALEIGH, N.C. – Gardner-Webb freshman Denton Spencer led the way Sunday during a busy Wolfpack Open, finishing in a tie for sixth at 141 pounds.

Spencer (Waverly, Ga. / Camden County HS) dropped his opening bout by an 11-3 major decision, but went on a tear from that point. The 141-pounder posted three-straight wins in dominant fashion – recording back-to-back tech falls by a combined 31-0 score – and pinning Queens (N.C.) wrestler Daniel Goodwin in just 1:34.

Spencer followed with a 3-2 decision over Virginia's Brian Courtney, before advancing to the fifth-place match with a 15-0 tech fall win over Appalachian State's Jonathan Millner.

Spencer's day was complete from there, as he reached the NCAA's six-match limit for the day.

Gardner-Webb's Philip Anderson also had a solid day at 133 pounds, posting a 3-2 record. The former Milton (Ga.) High standout won his first match with a pin of Campbell's Kyle Nesbit in 1:58, before falling, 9-2, in a decision to Virginia Tech's Dominic Latona.

Anderson bounced back with a tech fall (16-0) win over Clarion's Roshaun Cooley, then pinned Old Dominion wrestler Trevon Majette in 3:31. He dropped a 6-3 decision to Virginia Tech's Cole Manley in his final match of the day.

Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Friday December 8, beginning Southern Conference action on the road at VMI. The match is set to begin at 7:30 pm in Lexington, Va.
