BLACKSBURG, Va. – Gardner-Webb posted several notable finishes at the 2017 Hokie Open, with Tyler Marinelli leading the way in the open division and three newcomers posting top-6 finishes in the freshman/sophomore division Sunday.
Marinelli continued his strong start to the season at his new weight class, rolling to a 5-1 mark at 157 pounds in the open division Sunday. He captured two-straight decisions, including a 10-3 score vs. Doug Gudenburr of The Citadel, before falling by a 6-3 score to Duke standout Mitch Finesilver – who was wrestling unattached with the Blue Blood Wrestling Club.
Marinelli, from Jefferson, Ga., bounced back quickly, defeating North Carolina's Kennedy Monday by an 8-3 decision and topping Old Dominon's Shane Jones by a 4-1 decision to advance to the fifth-place match.
He had little trouble with The Citadel's Rian Burris, cruising to a 15-7 major decision to finish the day on a high note for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Several GWU starters wrestled in the freshman/sophomore division, with true freshmen Denton Spencer and Anthony Perrine placing high in their respective weight classes.
Spencer dominated the early going at 141 pounds, picking up three wins via bonus points. He sandwiched tech fall victories over Jacob Wynn of King College and Andrew Merholz of host Virginia Tech around a pin of Old Dominion's Mason Wohltman – taking Wohltman to the mat in just 2:53.
Spencer followed with a 5-0 decision over Virginia Tech's Caden Darber in the semifinals, winning three matches by a combined 39-3 margin in addition to his pin.
The former Camden County (Ga.) High standout wrestled well in the finals vs. Ohio's Alec Hagan before falling, 4-3, after double overtime.
Perrine took fifth at 197 pounds, picking up an early 10-4 decision over Emmanuel College's Richard Walker. He fell by major decision to Virginia Tech's John Borst, but bounced back to pin teammate Kenny VanVorst in 4:38 to advance in the consolation bracket.
Perrine closed the day with two more wins, defeating UNC Pembroke's Bryce Walker via 8-4 decision and taking a dominant, 14-7 decision over Appalachian State's Paul Carson in the fifth-place match.
Another newcomer, redshirt freshman Keegan Duncan, took sixth place at 125 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division.
The Goshen, Ky., native won a 4-2 decision over Appalachian state's Gavin Hutchens to open his day's work and bounced back from a 2-0 loss to NC State's Charles Lenox to knock off Chattanooga's T.J. Hicks (6-3) and Emmanuel's Will Moon (7-1) – advancing to the fifth-place match.
Duncan matched up with Old Dominion's Michael McGee in that bout, falling by 13-1 major decision to finish sixth.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action next Sunday, taking on Old Dominion and Northwestern in Norfolk, Va., in the 2017 Monarch Classic.
