Gardner-Webb's Denton Spencer Named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb's Denton Spencer was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday afternoon.
The Waverly, Ga., native went 5-0 to win the 141-pound weight class at the 2017 Cleveland State Open on December 16, and did so in dominant fashion. Spencer started his day in Cleveland with three-straight pins to move into the semifinals and advanced with a 4-2 sudden victory over Kent State's Tim Rooney.
In the finals, Spencer outscored Northwestern's Yahya Thomas by a 6-3 margin to win the title.
Spencer ran his season record to 16-5 in the process, which includes an 11-match win streak. The former Camden County (Ga.) High standout hasn't lost a match since the opening round of the Wolfpack Open on November 19.
Nine of his wins during the current streak have come via bonus points.
Spencer and the Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action in 2018, traveling to the annual Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga on January 1-2.
