BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb rallied to win for the second time this week, topping Appalachian State by a 4-3 score Saturday afternoon in women's tennis action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-4) fell behind early once again at doubles, with Appalachian State (4-11) winning at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles to secure that team point.
Sarah Reickmann and Sandra Bolstad rallied the 'Dogs at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively, with Reickmann finishing her match first to tie the team score.
Rieckmann cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles – and was followed by Bolstad's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 to give Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead.
The Mountaineers surged in front from there, getting a win from Melissa Machado at No. 4 singles – as she rallied from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win the final two – 6-4 and 6-0.
Megan Mullen then posted a straight sets win at No. 6 singles to retake the team lead, winning by scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
Needing wins in the final two matches of the day to secure a team win, Gardner-Webb pulled off the rally for the second match in a row.
Daniela Naupari pulled out a 7-6 (4) win in the first set at No. 3 singles and blitzed to a 6-1 win in the second set to even the team score.
Senior Catherine White stepped in with a clutch performance at No. 5 singles, winning two hard-fought sets by identical 7-5 scores – giving Gardner-Webb its seventh dual win of the season.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Thursday, March 16 – hosting North Carolina A&T at 1:00 pm.
