BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb rolled to a 7-0 win over Belmont Abbey Saturday morning in the first of two men's tennis matches on campus.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (9-11) swept through doubles play, with Johan Fors and Paul Hogan teaming up for a 6-0 win in the top flight. Maximilian Scholl and Breno Plentz came through with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and the tandem of Ross Gilbert and Adam Schmidt won by a 6-0 score at No. 3 doubles.
Gardner-Webb won five of its six singles matches in straight sets, with Scholl taking care of business quickly in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Juan Baez at No. 1 singles.
Fors picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, Anthony Brennan won by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 4 singles, Schmidt won by identical 6-1 scores at No. 5 singles and Michael Perry came on strong to win a 6-1, 6-0 match at No. 6 singles.
Stefano Puga won a hard fought victory at No. 3 singles, outlasting Belmont Abbey's Jacob Andress for a 6-7, 7-6, 10-2 win.
Gardner-Webb will take on Longwood later Saturday (2:30 pm) in a key Big South Conference match.
