HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball team was held to 21 kills, while James Madison posted a .263 hitting percentage, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell in straight sets in the season opener at the JMU Classic on Friday afternoon.
James Madison (1-0) took the match by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-16, holding Gardner-Webb (0-1) to a .054 hitting percentage and 41 digs, while the Dukes attacked at a .263 clip with 40 kills.
Kaelyn Dyson and
Joy Rhodes led Gardner-Webb in kills, with each collecting six smashes.
Keira Moore and
Amanda Sahm each had two blocks, while
Emma Milstead tallied 13 digs.
James Madison was led by Briley Brind'amour with 13 kills, Taylor Gail and Bryn Recker with two blocks, and Taylor Austin with 27 digs.
The first set was tightly contested early on, as there were five ties and three lead changes early on. GWU would lead 8-7 after a kill by
Nicole Celarek, but James Madison would score four consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead and control of the set. The Runnin' Bulldogs would pull within one point of the Dukes at 15-14 after a service error by Tilbe Yaglioglu, but JMU would go on a 10-2 run to close out the set, taking the opener by a 25-16 score.
Gardner-Webb would jump out to an early 3-0 lead to start the second set, highlighted by a service ace by Rhodes, but JMU would respond with a 5-1 run to take a 5-4 lead. The two teams would trade points until the Dukes would expand their lead to 11-8, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would answer with four consecutive points to retake the lead at 12-11 on a service ace by Sahm. James Madison would respond with a 6-2 spurt to take a 17-15 lead, and would go on take the set by a score of 25-19.
The two teams would trade points to start the third set, with GWU tying the score at 3-3 after a kill by Rhodes, but James Madison would go on a 6-1 run to take a 9-4 advantage and would control the remainder of the set to win by a 25-16 score and seal the overall match win.
Gardner-Webb will return to action tonight at 5:00 pm as the JMU Classic continues, taking on Rider.
