BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Maryland Terrapins topped the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs tonight in in their home opener by a score of 1-2. Gardner-Webb falls to 0-3 on the season, while Maryland climbs to 3-0.
After a scoreless first half, Maryland opened the scoring at the 53:15 mark as Mikayla Dayes found the back of the net. Gardner-Webb would counter their effort as
Stina Kleppe tallied her first goal of the season, and Gardner-Webb's first of the match to even the score in the 87
th minute. After the first overtime period, the game remained scoreless. Then, Mikayla Dayes of Maryland polished off the night with her second goal of the match leading Maryland to victory in a golden goal format.
"I am proud of our showing tonight," said Head Coach
Mike Varga. "The team executed our game plan and went toe to toe with a team from one of the top conferences in the country."
With Varga impressed with his team's response to Maryland taking the lead, Gardner-Webb kept pressing.
The Terrapins lead the way tonight on the offensive front with 18 shots, with nine on goal. Erin Seppi notched one save in goal for Maryland, while Rachel Egyed tallied two.
Gardner-Webb posted four shots in the second half, after just two in a scoreless first half. Of the six shots in the match for GWU, four were on goal. Gardner-Webb goalkeeper
Keely Brown had seven saves on the night, while playing all 104:47 minutes of the match.
Each team had excellent opportunities to score meaningful goals in the match, but were rules offside as GWU was guilty of it with 16:17 left on the clock in the second half, as was Mikayla Dayes in the first overtime period.
"The girls need to hold their heads high and continue to work" said Varga as the Runnin' Bulldogs prepare to welcome Charlotte to town next weekend.
