Gardner-Webb Senior Aaron Thomas Rolls To 2017 Gaston Amateur Title

GASTONIA, N.C. – Gardner-Webb senior Aaron Thomas carded a final round of 71 Sunday to win the 2017 Gaston County Amateur Tournament, capping a dominant weekend that saw him win the event by 11 strokes.
Thomas (Gastonia, N.C. / Highland Tech) shot under par in each of his three rounds, with the first two rounds played at Catawba Creek Country Club (Par 70) and the final round at Gaston Country Club (Par 72).
The Runnin' Bulldog standout fired a 69 in the opening round of the event at Catawba Creek and followed with a 67 on Saturday.
Thomas earned All-Big South Conference honors for Gardner-Webb as a junior, pacing the team and finishing seventh in the Big South with a 72.50 scoring average in 30 rounds of play.
His best round – 66 – came at the Elon Invitational last October, which helped the Runnin' Bulldogs to a team title in that tournament. He ranked second in the league with five top-10 finishes in 2016-2017 and had a high finish of fifth at the 2016 Golfweek Program Challenge.
Gardner-Webb will begin its fall season on Monday, traveling to Braselton, Ga., for the 2017 Bridgestone Intercollegiate. The 'Dogs will play in five tournaments this fall, before beginning the spring championship season on February 26-27 in Hilton Head, S.C.
