GWU Fall Tennis: James Bonk Invite

CARY, NC - Gardner-Webb men's tennis competed in their third event of the fall as Breno Plentz and Maximillian Scholl took the court at the James Bonk Invite hosted by Duke University. The event featured Duke, Wake Forest, Princeton, North Florida, Virginia Commonwealth, Louisville, UNC Chapel Hill, Elon, NC State, Charlotte, and Auburn.
 
Maximillian Scholl competed in singles collecting two wins. Scholl defeated NC State's Saveljic in two sets (6-0, 6-0). He also claimed victory over North Florida's Nilo Duarte by a score of 6-3 and 7-5.
 
Breno Plentz also competed in singles, while falling to Kyle Frankel of Elon 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4.
 
Scholl and Plentz competed in doubles as well, as they took on No. 1 seed Duke in the first round. After falling to Duke 8-3, Scholl and Plentz would go on to win consolation doubles as they defeated Wake Forest 8-4, and VCU 8-6.
 
Head coach Mike Griffith claimed, "we improved each match and returned very well in the finals to win it. This weekend was a step up from last weekend's UNC Wilmington Invite, so the progression is there and we are looking forward to our next event".
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs will compete in their Alumni match on Sept. 23. Plentz is slated to compete at Davidson on Sept. 29 – Oct. 1, while Scholl is geared to return back to Cary to compete in the ITA Regional on Oct. 12-15.
