Gardner-Webb Seals Victory with Early Goal

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs claimed their second victory of the season tonight as they shut out USC Upstate 1-0 at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

"It was good to get a win tonight in front of a supportive home crowd," said head coach Mike Varga

Samuelle Grove notched Gardner-Webb's lone goal of the night at the 17:34 mark. Grove received the cross from Annie Ross inside the box and secured a spot in the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Grove's goal early in the first period would prove to be enough for the 'Dawgs as they shut out USC Upstate.

In a fine offensive effort tonight, Gardner-Webb racked up 20 shots, while seven were on goal. Midfielder Stina Kleppe had herself a busy night as she recorded five shots, with three on goal. Samuelle Grove, who recorded the Runnin' Bulldogs lone goal of the match, also tallied three shots on the night with two on goal.

The Spartans recorded eight shots on the night, four of which were on goal. Spartan midfielder Kate Winegarner tallied two shots on goal, while Abbie Ellis and Isabella Burns took the remaining shots on goal for Upstate.

Gardner-Webb took three corner kicks on the night, while Upstate tallied two. Both teams were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.

Goalkeeper Keely Brown conceded zero goals on the night, as she made four saves. Tonight's shutout is her second of the season.

Samantha Munyon of USC Upstate recorded six saves tonight, while allowing one goal.

As Upstate remained persistent until the end coach Varga claimed, "I thought we had some mental lapses late that we need to clean up. But all in all, it was a good performance by the team. It will also create good momentum for us as we head into conference play."

With tonight's win, the Runnin' Bulldogs climb to 2-7 on the season. Their next match is this Saturday as they travel to Lynchburg, V.A. to begin Big South play against Liberty University.
