Runnin' Bulldogs Take Second At 2017 Bridgestone Stroke Play Event

BRASELTON, Ga. – Gardner-Webb fired a two-round score of 594 to finish second at the 2017 Bridgestoke Stroke Play Tournament Tuesday.
The Runnin' Bulldogs kicked off their fall season at the 7,003-yard (Par 72) Chateau Elan Legends Course in a six-team field that also included host USC Upstate (A-Sun), Appalachian State (Sun Belt), Jacksonville (A-Sun), Jacksonville State (OVC) and Presbyterian (Big South).
Gardner-Webb finished five strokes behind eventual team champion Jacksonville for the event. GWU fired a 296 in the opening round and a 298 over the final 18 holes. The 'Dogs finished five strokes in front of third-place Appalachian State, with USC Upstate, Jacksonville State and Presbyterian rounding out the final standings.
Sophomore Steffen Smith returned to his home state with a solid performance, shooting one-under over the first 18 holes and carding a 75 in the final round to finish in a tie for fourth individually. Smith sank two birdies over his final nine holes to maintain a top-5 finish.
Aaron Thomas, who was fresh off an individual crown at the 2017 Gaston County Amateur, also finished in a tie for fourth – shooting 72-74-146 over two rounds. He posted birdies on the 14th and 16th holes in the final round, overcoming a series of bogeys on the back nine.
Jake Kennedy (75-77-152) and Jonathan Henry (79-73-152) finished in a tie for 19th individually, while Chu-Ming Wu (79-76-155) took 27th place. Chad Phillips (78-85-163) finished 42nd for the event.
Next up for the Runnin' Bulldogs is the 2017 Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C., on October 2-3.
