Perrine, Anderson Record Victories as Wrestling Falls to Campbell

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Anthony Perrine and Philip Anderson recorded victories, but the Gardner-Webb wrestling squad dropped its second consecutive conference match on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Campbell Camels, 31-7.
GWU's Tyler Marinelli, the 27th-ranked wrestler in his weight class, got the match started at 157 pounds, but ultimately lost 9-0. Brett Stein followed at 165 pounds, and fought to a 9-5 defeat as the Camels took a 6-0 lead early in the contest.
Perrine was the first Runnin' Bulldog to record a victory, winning at 197 pounds. Perrine led 2-1 at the end of the first period, before his opponent made it a 2-2 match heading into the final period.
In the third, Perrine managed to score one point, while holding his opponent scoreless, earning a 3-2 decision. His victory cut into Campbell's then 14-0 lead, making it a 14-3 contest in favor of the visitors.
The visiting Camels extended their lead to 24-3 thanks to a victory at 285 pounds and a Gardner-Webb forfeit at 125 pounds.
Anderson had a dominant day at 133 pounds, jumping out to a 4-1 lead by the end of the second period. In the final two minutes, Anderson outscored his opponent 9-3 to win via major decision, 13-4. At that point, Campbell led 24-7.
In the final two matches, GWU's Denton Spencer and Joby Armenta took defeats at the 141 and 147 pounds respectively as the Camels left Boiling Springs with a 31-7 victory.
The loss drops the Runnin' Bulldogs to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in SoCon action, while Campbell earned its first conference victory and improved to 4-6 overall.
Gardner-Webb will host its third consecutive home match on Friday, January 26, when SIU-Edwardsville visits Boiling Springs. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
