BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A cold night offensively for Gardner-Webb, paired with hot shooting by visiting Campbell doomed the Runnin' Bulldogs as GWU fell to the Camels by a score of 73-44 on Tuesday night in Big South Conference action.
Gardner-Webb (13-6, 3-4 Big South) made just 18 of 63 attempts (28.6 percent) from the floor, while Campbell (10-8, 3-4 Big South) made 27 of its 52 shot attempts (51.9 percent), including a 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) fourth period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had two scorers in double figures, led by
Alexus Hill with 12 points on 6-of-16 shooting, followed by
Tierra Huntsman, who had 10 points on a 4-of-16 performance.
Campbell had a trio of scorers reach double digits, led by MaKala Rouse, who had a game-high 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor.
The first period was tightly contested, as there were three ties to go along with one lead change in the opening 5:53. GWU would take an early lead, scoring the first basket on a layup by Huntsman with 9:06 on the clock, and would last lead at 6-4 after a mid-range jumper by Hill with 5:04 to go.
The Camels would respond with a layup by Rouse with 4:42 on the clock to tie the game, and would take the lead after a three pointer by Kyra Davis with 4:07 to go. Campbell would go on to lead by five points, 15-10, at the end of the opening quarter after Lauren McNamara-Clement sank a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
Campbell would control the second period, outscoring the Runnin' Bulldogs by a 19-7 margin, including a 10-0 run over the final 2:29 to lead by 17 points at 34-17 at the halftime break.
Play was even throughout the duration of the third period, as both teams only made four baskets, but three baskets from long distance by Campbell, compared to none by GWU in the frame allowed the Camels to expand their lead to 21 points, 49-28, as play headed into the final quarter.
The Camels continued their hot shooting in the fourth period, making 10-of-14 baskets, including 10 of their last 11 attempts. Gardner-Webb would trim its deficit to 19 points after a driving layup by Hill with 6:48 to go, but Campbell would answer with a trey by Summer Price on its next possession, and would outscore GWU by a 20-10 margin over the remainder of the game to take a 29-point decision at 73-44.
