BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Paul Hogan's victory at No. 5 singles propelled the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over the Davidson Wildcats, giving GWU its first victory of the spring season.

Mike Griffith. "Winning two tiebreakers was obviously the difference maker in such a competitive match that came down to the wire. I'm incredibly proud of Paul (Hogan) for playing the way he did and clinching the match for us. It was great to start our road trip with a win, and we hope this momentum carries over into the weekend for us as we take on two tough opponents in Nashville."
The Wildcats started the match by winning at No. 1 doubles, but the Runnin' Bulldogs responded by winning the final two contests to take the doubles point.
Adam Schmidt and
Millen Hurrion were victorious at No. 3 double and
Maximilian Scholl and
Breno Plentz concluded the doubles action with a 7-6 [3] victory at No. 2.
In singles play, the Wildcats started strong by handing Gardner-Webb two defeats at No. 3 and 4 singles, but Scholl and Hurrion would quickly swing the momentum in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs by winning their contests in the top two singles positions.
Davidson won at No. 6 singles to even the match at three, but Hogan's heroics at No. 5 clinched the match for Gardner-Webb. After dropping the first set 6-2, the junior from Lenior, North Carolina won the second set 6-4 and the third set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 [3].
The Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 1-2 overall with the win, while Davidson is still searching for its first victory of the 2018 spring season.
Gardner-Webb will return to action over the weekend in Nashville, Tennessee. The Runnin' Bulldogs are set to face Lipscomb on Saturday, January 27 at 5 p.m. and Belmont on Sunday, January 28
th at 12:30 p.m.
