DAVIDSON, N.C. – In the final meet of the regular season, Gardner-Webb's men and women's swim teams split with the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Davidson, North Carolina.
The Gardner-Webb women rebounded from a tough senior day defeat last weekend, defeating the Wildcats, 157-123. The Runnin' Bulldogs men's squad lost a 165-97 decision.
"Both the teams are ready for a fantastic conference meet in two weeks," said head coach
Mike Simpson.
In women's action, there were several triumphs for the Runnin' Bulldogs, led by
Tessa Walsh's three victories.
"The ladies had a lot of nice wins today," Simpson stated. "There were many bright spots for the team, and they raced well throughout the meet against a tough opponent."
Walsh, a junior from Christiansburg, Virginia, had a career day with three victories. In the 200 Yard Butterfly, Gardner-Webb swept the top-three finishing positions, with Walsh (2:05.62) narrowly defeating teammates
Jessi Snover (2:05.96) and
London Schumacher (2:08.97). Walsh also scored victories in the in the 100 Yard Butterfly, as the Runnin' Bulldogs again took the top-three spots, while helping the 4 x 50 Yard Freestyle Relay squad to a first-place finish with a time of 1:38.80
Erd, Hungary's Lili Toth was victorious in the 100 Yard Backstroke and was part of the winning 4 x 50 Freestyle relay team. Snover and
Audrey Robinson also won two events, while
Kelsey Williams (100 Yard Freestyle),
London Schumacher (400 Yard IM) and
Morgan VanderSchaaf (500 Yard Freestyle) each won a single race.
Miranda Johns set a lifetime best in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, finishing in 2:28.71 en route to a fourth-place finish. Â
Although the women were victorious, the men fell to a tough Davidson squad.
"The men ran into a Davidson team that swam inspired on senior day," Simpson said. "We had some really good swims but had to regroup after the first half of the meet. Our guys responded well and had several highlights in the second part of the day."
Jordan Mintz won the fifth men's event of the meet, the 100 Yard Breaststroke, with a sub one-minute time. Mintz (57.16) was the only swimmer to finish in less than 60 seconds, topping teammate
Austin Toney. Mintz was also victorious in the 200 Yard Breaststroke later in the day.
"Jordan's victories were certainly a highlight," mentioned Simpson. "
Peter Wakeley and
Chase Mattingly also had nice swims in the meet, while
John O'Connell came up big in the 200 Yard Butterfly as a last minute substitution. John a breakthrough swim finishing second, just one second behind the winner."
Despite some strong performances, the Gardner-Webb men fell to the Wildcats of Davidson, 165-97
Both squads will take time off before heading to the CCSA Championships in Athens, Georgia. The championships will begin on Wednesday, February 14 and conclude Sunday, February 17.
