Men's Tennis Suffers 5-2 Defeat at Belmont Sunday Afternoon
January 28, 2018 | Men's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Maximilian Scholl and Adam Schmidt were both victorious in singles play, but the Gardner-Webb men's tennis squad suffered a 5-2 setback at Belmont on Sunday afternoon.
"These non-conference indoor matches against quality opponents help us get ready for a grueling Big South Conference schedule in March and April," said head coach Mike Griffith. "Obviously our goal is to win every match, so we will continue to work hard and improve."
The Runnin' Bulldogs lost the doubles point to the Bruins, as the hosts won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles Scholl and Breno Plentz were leading, 5-4, but the match went unfinished.
Scholl, the 105th ranked player in the country, started off singles play in the No. 1 position by cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 over Belmont's Hendrik Inno.
Schmidt also recorded a win for Gardner-Webb at No. 5 singles, taking the first set 6-1 and securing the victory in a second set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4).
Both the Dawgs and the Bruins are now 1-4 on the season.
Following five straight road contests to begin the season, the Runnin' Bulldogs will play their first home match on February 7th when the USC Upstate Spartans visit Boiling Springs. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
