BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb resumes its Southern Conference slate on Wednesday night, hosting Appalachian State at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
It is the first home dual of a what will be a very busy two-month stretch for the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-4, 1-0 SoCon), who picked up a road win at VMI to open SoCon action in December. Following Wednesday's match, Gardner-Webb will host Campbell (Jan. 21) and SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 26) before heading back on the road for a non-conference bout at Duke (Feb. 1).
Gardner-Webb will then host Ohio (Feb. 4), Chattanooga (Feb. 11), The Citadel (Feb. 13) and Davidson (Feb. 16) to close out the regular season.
Appalachian State (3-3, 1-0 SoCon) owns a win over Davidson in league action. Each of the Mountaineers' three dual losses this season have come to nationally-ranked teams (North Carolina, NC State and Oklahoma).
The Mountaineers captured a 19-17 win over Gardner-Webb in Boone last season, one year after Gardner-Webb upset the nationally-ranked Mountaineers in Boiling Springs en route to a share of the 2016-2017 SoCon regular season crown.
Gardner-Webb is paced this season by veteran
Tyler Marinelli at 157 pounds (17-4, 1-0 SoCon). The Jefferson, Ga., junior is 5-0 in dual matches so far this season.
Newcomer
Denton Spencer has been strong as well for the Runnin' Bulldogs, going 16-5 so far (1-0 SoCon) with 11 consecutive wins. The Waverly, Ga., true freshman hasn't lost since November 19 at the Wolfpack Open.
Wednesday's match is set to begin at 7:00 pm and will stream live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com), with Tyler Helms on the call.
