BURLINGTON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's golf finished sixth at the 2018 Elon Phoenix Invitational Tuesday in a tightly-packed team finish.
The tournament was played at the 6,867-yard (Par 71) Alamance Country Club.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were only four strokes out of second place and nine strokes off the lead after 54 holes. Gardner-Webb (282-282-288-852) finished two strokes out of a tie for fourth place between Big South squads Redford and Presbyterian.
Jonathan Henry (68-70-73-211) led the way for Gardner-Webb individually, shooting below par over his first two rounds to finish in a tie for ninth. Henry finished with 12 birdies over 54 holes, including five during a strong first round.
Freshman
Zack Byers (72-70-70-212) was close behind in a tie for 14th, carding back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish strong. Byers had nine birdies for the tournament.
Steffen Smith (74-70-73-217) pulled into a tie for 40th,
Jake Scruggs (70-72-77-219) finished tied for 50th and
Miles Albright (72-76-72-220) finished tied for 56th to round out Gardner-Webb's team scoring.
Host Elon won the event with a 54-hole score of 843.
