HIGH POINT, N.C. –
Emily Jonas scored the equalizer for the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in the 55
th minute, but after two overtime periods, Gardner-Webb's match with Big South opponent High Point ended in a 1-1 draw.
"High Point is a tough place to play, and we had a slow start but were able to make some adjustments and change the match," said head coach
Mike Varga. "I am proud of the collective effort and ability to battle back from a goal down. We will take a point on the road and shift our focus to a good Campbell team on Saturday."
The Panthers' (5-8-4, 3-3-3 Big South Conference) first shot of the night in the 11
th minute found its way into the back of the net as the home team took an early 1-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb (8-4-4, 5-1-1 BSC) had three attempts on goal in the first half after High Point took the lead, with each attempt coming from a different Runnin' Bulldog.
Stina Kleppe,
Alisha Holcombe and
Maddie Turlington all had shots saved as they could not net the equalizer.
Despite surrendering the early goal,
Keely Brown held strong in the net for Gardner-Webb and saved High Point's final attempt on goal in the first 45 minutes. She also quickly stopped a shot in the opening minutes of the second period, preventing the Panthers from taking a 2-0 lead.
In the 55
th minute, Jonas scored her first goal of the season from distance, putting a strike in the back of the net from 35 yards out to tie the contest.
The 'Dogs had seven additional attempts to pull ahead and end the game in regulation, but High Point's Talia Klimes saved shots on goal from
Jada Newton and
Callista Eckert, as well as a pair from
Alisha Holcombe.
Holcombe and Eckert's attempts came with under 10 minutes respectively. Eckert's shot was Gardner-Webb's final attempt of regulation, coming with just three seconds left on the clock, but the teams remained deadlocked at one goal each after regulation.
Holcome took the Runnin' Bulldogs only attempt of the first overtime period, but it was stopped by Klimes. For High Point, Skylar Prillaman's shot was wide of the net.

In the second OT session, Turlington had two chances – one in the 103
rd minute and another in the 109
th minute. Her first attempt was on goal, while her second shot was wide, as the 'Dogs battled to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes.
The Runnin' Bulldogs outshot the Panthers, 16-9 and held a 10-4 advantage in attempts on goal.
For Gardner-Webb, Brown stopped three shots, while Klimes saved nine of ten shots faced for High Point.
Next up, Gardner-Webb will play its final home match of the regular season on Saturday, October 20 against the Campbell Fighting Camels. Coach Varga and his staff will honor the team's eight seniors and graduate student
