Women's Tennis Finishes Play at ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Coach Jim Corn and the Gardner-Webb women's tennis team headed to the very campus where a court is named in his honor – the University of the North Carolina – to compete in the ITA Regionals from on October 18 and 19.

"We come to these events to compete hard as a team and individuals and always want to get better," said Corn. "Ultimately, that's why you play, to improve. We faced some tough competition, and the girls worked hard on the court. We are very appreciative of the chance to compete. Now, we'll focus on finishing our fall season strong at the Wofford Fall Invitational in two weeks."

In doubles action, Gardner-Webb entered two pairings, with both falling to Appalachian State.

Mayumi Saguchi and Daniela Naupari fell to Maria Zacarias and Heidi Swope, 8-2, while Miljana Ristic and Valentine Limauge battled Teodora Sevo and Rebecca Morse. Despite a fight from Ristic and Limauge, Sevo and Morse came out on top, 8-5.

Saguchi started off the regionals with a Thursday afternoon victory against Elon's Olivia Archer, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Her tournament run ended in the Round of 16, as Wake Forest's Alexis Franco eliminated her.

Naupari was Gardner-Webb's lone entry in the main draw and faced off against third-seeded Meible Chi of Duke. Napauri fell, 6-1, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Eva Nikos of College of Charleston defeated Naupari, 6-2, 6-4.

In the B singles draw, Limauge was the lone Runnin' Bulldog to compete, earning a bye in the Round of 64. In the second round, Madalina Man of College of Charleston defeated the Gardner-Webb sophomore in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

After returning home from Chapel Hill, the Runnin' Bulldogs will take a week off before competing in the Wofford Fall Invitational from November 2-4.
