Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Earns 10th Win of Season with 4-1 Victory at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – Stina Kleppe scored twice and Jada Newton and Sam Grove each added goals as the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 4-1 win over the Hampton Pirates.

This marks the first time since 2009 that the Runnin' Bulldogs have reached double-digit wins.

"Hampton has proven to be a tough place to play on the road for conference teams," said head coach Mike Varga. "Combine that with our slow start, and we made the match difficult in the beginning. We settled down and were able to finish our chances. I like the energy of our team in the second half. Now we shift our focus to our quarterfinal match on Sunday."

Hampton (1-12-1, 0-9-1 Big South) scored first, getting on the scoreboard just six minutes into the match, but Gardner-Webb would tie the contest in the 26th minute.

After the Runnin' Bulldogs took five shots, including three on goal, Jada Newton placed Gardner-Webb's sixth shot of the afternoon into the back of the net to tie the contest at one. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored four unanswered goals en route to the victory.

Gardner-Webb's (10-4-4, 7-1-2) second goal came from Kleppe, who has scored four goals in the past two matches.

In the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs once again attempted five shots before scoring its third goal of the day.

In the 64th minute, Samuelle Grove became the third different player to score, receiving a pass from Callista Eckert and placing the ball past Maya Andrews to give the 'Dogs a 3-1 lead.

Gardner-Webb would score its final goal of the match just seven minutes later, as Kleppe effectively put the match out of reach for the visiting Pirates.

It was Kleppe's second consecutive multi-goal match, as she also accounted for both goals in the Runnin' Bulldogs' 2-1 win over Campbell last Saturday.

Gardner-Webb took nearly five times as many shots as Hampton, taking 28 compared to just six for the Pirates. 17 of the Runnin' Bulldogs' looks were on goal. Kleppe led all 'Dogs with five shots, while Grove and Erin Shamleffer each had four.

In goal, Keely Brown and Katelyn Kellogg split time, with Brown earning the win and accounting for two of three saves. Kellogg stopped one of Hampton's shots.

With the regular season complete, the Runnin' Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the Big South Conference tournament. The team will host a quarterfinal matchup at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 28. The opponent will be announced soon.
