BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Jana Braun's goal in the 88
th minute led the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs over the Charleston Southern Bucs, 2-1, and gave the 'Dogs their third conference win of the year.
"This win was huge for the team's confidence," said head coach
Mike Varga. "Charleston Southern came in and pressed us and took us away from our game plan. We were able to battle for 90 minutes and come away with a win."
Charleston Southern (5-4-2, 2-3-1 Big South Conference) began the scoring early as Riley Rumbley scored from the left side of the box. Rumbley's third goal of the season was assisted by Dakota Fiedler and Peyton Motley.
For Gardner-Webb (6-4-3, 3-1-1 Big South),
Aubrie Jackson netted the equalizer in the 28
th minute.
Erin Shamleffer crossed the bar from the far right side of the pitch near the corner flag to Jackson, who headed the ball into the net from the lower left portion of the box.
Over the remaining minutes of the first period, Gardner-Webb's back line did not allow CSU to attempt a shot, while two Runnin' Bulldogs –
Jaasiel Forde and
Ty Snell – had their shots saved.
In the opening minutes of the second period, the two squads traded shots with each goal keeper saving an attempt.
Keely Brown made her first and only save in the 50
th minute, while the Bucs' Alyssa Dellacqua saved
Alisha Holcombe's attempt in the 53
rd minute.
Charleston Southern took its final shot in the 60
th minute, as Shamleffer and the Gardner-Webb defense continually sent the ball to the Runnin' Bulldogs' attacking third of the field.
Gardner-Webb managed seven shots over the remainder of the game but would not place a shot on goal until Braun played hero in the 88
th minute to win the contest for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
With less than two minutes left in the match, Braun received a pass from
Abbey Smith and attempted a shot that ended up in the back of net after it was blocked and subsequently deflected by Charleston Southern's Dellacqua into the net.
After Braun's goal, the Runnin' Bulldogs held steady over the final 1:39 and successfully cleared the Bucs' fifth and final corner kick of the match with 32 seconds remaining.
In goal, Brown saved one shot, and Dellacqua stopped seven attempts for CSU.
The two teams took 29 shots, with Gardner-Webb holding a 19-10 advantage overall. The Runnin' Bulldogs managed to put 10 attempts on goal, while CSU had just two shots on goal.
