PRINCETON, N.J. – Gardner-Webb men's tennis players
Maximilian Scholl and
Millen Hurrion traveled to Princeton University and successfully defeated four teams to capture the championship at the Farnsworth Invitational on the campus of Princeton University.
The format of the event was similar to the Davis Cup, with players from each school pairing up to form a team. Each pair played one doubles match followed by two singles matches against another pair. The team that won 2-of-3 matches advanced to the next round of the winner's bracket.
En route to the championship, the Gardner-Webb duo dispatched some of the top teams from the northeast - Drexel, William & Mary and Temple – before defeating Princeton on championship Sunday.
Scholl and Hurrion began the weekend with two victories in doubles action, first defeating Xandy Hammitt and Juan Sanchez of Drexel, 8-3. Following the opening round victory in bracket play, Scholl and Hurrion got the better of William & Mary's Oren Vasser and Brenden Volk, 8-2. On the day, the pair allowed their opponents to only win a combined five games.
In singles action, both players cruised to two-set wins over the aforementioned pair from Drexel. Scholl defeated Hammit, 6-3, 6-2, while Hurrion earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sanchez.
On Saturday, the pair continued their stellar play, first pairing up to defeat Alberto Caceres-Cases and Mark Wallner of Temple in doubles action, 8-4.
In singles play, Scholl defeated William & Mary's Vasser, 6-2, 6-2 in his first singles match and earned a three-set win in match number two over Temple's Caceres-Casas, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5.
Hurrion earned a three-set victory against Temple's Wallner. Hurrion dropped the first set, 5-7, before battling back to even the match at one set each with a 6-2 victory in set two. He clinched the match by winning a supertiebreaker in set three, 10-7.
With the Saturday victories, the duo advanced to Sunday's championship against Princeton's Justin Barki and Jimmy Wasserman.
On Sunday, the Gardner-Webb pair won a shortened doubles match, 6-2 over Barki and Wasserman. In singles play, Scholl clinched the championship with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Wasserman. Hurrion fell to Barki 2-6, 7-6 (6), 4-10.
"There was a lot of talent at this tournament," said former Runnin' Bulldog and first-year assistant coach
Matt Parker. "For our guys to come out on top is a testament to the level we can play at. I'm very proud of the way they represented Gardner-Webb this weekend."
