Griffith Announces 2019 Gardner-Webb Tennis Schedule

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Head coach Mike Griffith announced the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs men's tennis schedule today, which features 19 matches, including eight consecutive played on Gardner-Webb's home courts beginning in late February.
"We play less matches this year with the main focus being on Big South teams," said Griffith. "We won't play any non-conference matches after March 19 and also welcome several conference opponents to Gardner-Webb, so we're happy to have a lot of those matches at home this season."
Griffith will take Gardner-Webb to Coastal Carolina on Friday, February 1 for the season opener. The 2 p.m. match in Conway, SC will be followed by a road contest at UNC Wilmington just 24 hours later. UNCW is one of two ranked teams that Gardner-Webb will face in 2019. The Seahawks finished the 2018 season ranked 66th in the ITA poll.
One week after the match against the Seahawks, Griffith's Runnin' Bulldogs play on their home courts for the first time in 2019 when they welcome the Troy Trojans to Boiling Springs for a 2 p.m. first serve on Saturday, February 9.
After the home contest, Gardner-Webb will begin the first of two three-match road trips. The 'Dogs will stay in the Carolinas for the first road swing, traveling to Davidson, N.C. State and Wofford.
The Wolfpack of NC State are the final ranked team that the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to. Gardner-Webb dropped a 5-2 decision to the 29th ranked Wolfpack last season.
When Belmont Abbey visits Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 22nd, it marks the start of eight straight home matches for the Runnin' Bulldogs which will last more than 30 days. The Runnin' Bulldogs will host non-conference opponents South Carolina State (March 2), Kennesaw State (March 17) and Limestone (March 19).
In March, 6-of-8 matches will take place in Boiling Springs. Of the eight matches in March, five are Big South contests.
Longwood (March 9), Campbell (March 15) and Presbyterian (March 27) will all travel to GWU, while the 'Dogs will hit the road to face Radford (March 29) and Winthrop (March 31) to close out the Month.
Gardner-Webb will close out the regular season with three matches in April, two of which are on the road. Conference matches at USC Upstate (April 4) and Hampton (April 11) are sandwiched between the Runnin' Bulldogs' final home match on Tuesday, April 9th when in-state rival UNC Asheville comes to town.
The Big South tournament is slated for April 16-19 and will be hosted by Radford University.
Last season, the Runnin' Bulldogs earned the No. 6 seed and upset No. 3 Presbyterian in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 2 Campbell, 4-1.
