Gardner-Webb Suffers 59-53 Setback at Wofford on Thursday Evening

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite building a five-point lead at the half, Gardner-Webb was unable to maintain its advantage as Wofford took the lead for good with 3:37 left in the game to earn the 59-53 victory.

The two teams were tied following the third quarter, and although Wofford took the lead early in the fourth, Gardner-Webb was able to tie it twice, before Wofford pulled away.

The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 4-2 overall, while the Terriers even their record at 4-4.

Gabrielle Caponegro caught the hot hand early for Gardner-Webb, scoring four of the Runnin' Bulldogs' first five points, but it was Morgan Pointer who gave the 'Dogs their first lead of game, 8-6.

After Wofford (4-4) tied the game on two occasions, Carley Plentovich, along with twin sister Savannah Plentovich would embark on a 5-0 run, but the Terriers end the quarter with five consecutive points. After one quarter of play, the two teams were deadlocked at 15.

By halftime, Gardner-Webb had led by as many as seven and went into the locker room with a 33-28 advantage. It was S. Plentovich's eurostep and-1 that gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a five-point lead with 3:28 until the intermission, and each team managed an additional two points prior to the half.

GWU (4-2) shot 37 percent in the opening half, compared to just 31 percent by the Terriers. Wofford held a 22-14 lead in the rebounding battle over the first 20 minutes.

The Runnin' Bulldogs lead hovered around five points in the third. When GWU led 40-34, Wofford embarked on a 9-3 run over the 3:15 of the period, and led briefly for the first time since the opening quarter.

Jhessyka Williams' free throw with under a minute would knot the score at 43 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Terriers took a two-point lead on two occasions early in the fourth, but each time GWU managed to tie the contest.

After the Runnin' Bulldogs tied the ball game at 49, Wofford go on a 10-4 over the final three-plus minutes to secure the win.

Savannah Plentovich led Gardner-Webb with 16 points and seven boards. Ky'Asia Stanford added nine points, while Caponegro scored eight points and collected six rebounds. The redshirt sophomore also blocked four shots in the defeat. Eight of nine players that saw action in the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Wofford was led by Jamari McDavid's 12 points, while three players – Marissa Booker, Chloe Wanink and Da'Ja Green – each scored 10.

The two teams ended the game with relatively even shooting percentages. The Runnin' Bulldogs hit 21 of their 67 attempts (31.3 percent), while the Terrier shot 18-of-54 (33.3 percent). Gardner-Webb shot 25 percent in the third and fourth quarters.

Rebounding and free throws proved to be the difference in the contest. Wofford won the rebounding battle, 44-32. The Terriers attempted 27 free throws, making 22 (81.5 percent), while Gardner-Webb went to the charity stripe only ten times and made six.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Monday, December 3 when Mount St. Mary's visits Paul Porter Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
