SPARTANBURG, S.C. ā Head Coach
Jim Corn took the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to the Wofford Fall Invite to close out the 2018 fall tennis season and saw all six players compete. The team earned three consolation finals victories ā one in doubles and two in singles.
Below are details on the performances of the Runnin' Bulldogs performances at Wofford.
Doubles
Adrienne Vesely and
Milica Panic played in the gray doubles bracket and lost their opening round match to Wofford's Joch and Massey, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, they faced off against a paring from West Virginia State and won 6-1 to advance to the consolation championship. In the final match, the duo secured a 7-5 victory over Emory's Olcay and Taylor.
Mayumi Saguchi and
Miljana Ristic competed in the gold bracket, losing their first match to a duo from Radford, 6-1. In the consolation portion of the bracket, Saguchi and Ristic faced off against a team from the home school on Sunday morning and fell 6-2 before losing by an identical score to a duo from Western Carolina in the afternoon session of day three.
In the black doubles bracket,
Daniela Naupari and
Valentine Limauge teamed up to cruise to a 6-1 win over a pair from East Tennessee State and moved on to face off against a duo from NAIA school Brenau University. The pair cruised to the championship with a 6-2 win but hit a roadblock in the finals, falling to King and O'brien from ASU, 6-0.
Singles
Playing in the bracket named after the host school, Naupari lost her first-round matchup against ETSU's Raquel Amaro, but battled her way to the consolation championship with a 6-2, 6-1, two-set win over Western Carolina's Lauren McCall. Naupri drew Wofford's Cassidy Hicks in the consolation finals and won in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
In the black singles bracket, Saguchi had a similar fate to Naupari, losing in the first round but making her way to the consolation championship against Brenau's Peeraya Charoensirisutthikul. In the consolation semifinals, Emory's Defne Olcay, 6-2, 6-3. In the consolation finals, Saguchi won set one, 7-5 before Charoensirisutthikul retired, giving Saguchi the victory.
Ristic competed in the gold bracket and fell in the first round in two sets to Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico in two sets. Gonzalez-Rico earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory. Following the loss, she rebounded with a 6-2, 6-0 win over West Virginia State's Lauren Isbey, but ended play with a two-set loss to Shelby King of ASU.
Limauge's time in singles play went the opposite as Naupari and Saguchi. The Brussels, Belgium native won her first-round contest but fell in the semifinals to Yunuen Elizararas, 6-3, 6-1. She ended singles play by falling to Radford's Tyler Blalock, 6-1, 6-3.
Vesley won two straight matches in the SoCon singles bracket to advance to the championship. She defeated Western Carolina's Alexa Webb, 6-2, 7-5 before earning a three-set win against Emory's Stephanie Taylor, 6-3, 6-7, 10-8. Vesely faced off against East Tennessee State's Yi Chi Ma in the championship, but Ma won in two sets.
Brittney Wilbur defeated Panic in the first round of the College singles bracket, 6-3, 6-3, but Panic shook off the loss and made quick work of UNC Asheville's Madeline Finley, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket. In the consolation finals, Panic lost to Radford's Marielle Leahy, 6-2, 6-0.
