Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Announces 2019 Schedule
November 05, 2018 | Women's Tennis
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Head women's tennis coach Jim Corn announced his team's 18-match slate for 2019 today, with eight of 18 matches set to take place in Boiling Springs.
"We have a great schedule," said Corn. "We always challenge ourselves with touch non-conference matches, so hopefully we're up the challenge. We play difficult opponents to prepare for Big South contests. We go to fall tournaments and challenge ourselves out of conference so that we're prepared for conference play and don't have any surprises. That's just my philosophy."
Gardner-Webb will open with a home contest against the Elon Phoenix on the third Saturday in January. The 1 p.m. match on January 19th is the Runnin' Bulldogs' only contest in the first month of 2019.
After the match against Elon, the 'Dogs will have more than two weeks to prepare for a three-game road swing that begins on Saturday, February 6th with an 11 a.m. first serve at Davidson and concludes ten days later with a match at North Carolina Central, a team that Gardner-Webb handled last season, 6-1.
Following a home match with Charlotte on February 21, the Runnin' Bulldogs' last match of February will be the start of Big South Conference play. On Saturday, February 23, the Longwood Lancers will visit Boiling Springs. Corn's team defeated the Lancers, 5-2 to end the 2018 regular season and clinch a spot in the Big South tournament, but it was Longwood that earned the first-round tournament victory, 4-3.
On March 2, Corn and the Runnin' Bulldogs will embark on a four-match, eight-day road trip that begins in Cullowhee, N.C. against Western Carolina and concludes on March 10 at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC. Sandwiched between those matches are contests against conference newcomer USC Upstate (March 6), as well as Charleston Southern (March 9).
When Wofford visits Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 13 at 2 p.m., the Runnin' Bulldogs will begin another quick four-match slate, with those contests taking place in just 10 days. Of the four matches, Wofford is the only out of conference opponent as the 'Dogs will host Campbell (March 15), while visiting defending BSC champion Winthrop (March 20) and newcomer Hampton (March 23).
To close out the month of March, the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Asheville, N.C. for a battle with in-state rival UNC Asheville at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28.
Gardner-Webb will play three matches in April, with two taking place on its home courts. First, nearby Limestone College will take the trip to Boiling Springs on Tuesday, April 2nd and after a trip to Radford on April 6, the Runnin' Bulldogs will close out the 2018 regular season with a home match against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10.
Six days after the conclusion of the regular season, the Radford Highlanders will host the Big South Conference tournament. The tournament will begin on Tuesday, April 16 and a champion will be crowned on Friday, April 19.
