NEWARK, Del. – Unable to answer the Delaware Blue Hens' 22-2 run early in the contest, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs fell on the road, 69-45, to conclude its two-game road trip.
Playing in her home state of Delaware,
Ky'Asia Stanford sparked a 6-0 Gardner-Webb run that lasted just 80 seconds, to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 9-5 lead with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter.
Gardner-Webb's (4-6 overall) lead was short lived, as the Blue Hens ended the quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 20-11 lead after a quarter and scored the first six points of the second period to extend their lead to 16 points.
Morgan Pointer's three-pointer stopped Delaware's run, and
Jhessyka Williams' jumper helped the 'Dogs get within 11, but once again the home team would answer.
Delaware (4-6 overall) did allow the momentum to remain on Gardner-Webb's side. After
Neydja Petithomme's jumper from the left wing, the Blue Hens outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs to take a 38-19 lead to the locker room.
Neither team was able to score for nearly four minutes to start the third quarter, but it was Delaware that scored the first four points of the period to extend its lead to 42-19 before Petithomme got hot for Gardner-Webb.
The graduate transfer from the University of Miami scored five unanswered points, while Williams added a three-pointer on a fast break to pull the Runnin' Bulldogs within 15 points, 42-27, but once again, the Blue Hens were able to answer Gardner-Webb.
Delaware outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs by five to end the period and held a commanding 51-31 lead after three quarters. The Blue Hens led by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter and would go on to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs, 69-45.
Gardner-Webb struggled from the floor, hitting just 27.7 percent of its attempts (18-of-65). The 'Dogs coughed up ball up on 19 occasions, including 12 times in the second half.
Williams was the only Runnin' Bulldog to finish in double figures, scoring 13 points of 6-of-11 shooting. Petithomme (9 points),
Savannah Plentovich (8 points) and Pointer (7 points) were all on the brink of hitting double figures.
Caponegro led Gardner-Webb with eight rebounds, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were outrebounded, 43-36.
Bailey Kargo was the Blue Hens' top scorer with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point land. Alison Lee was the other Delaware player to score in double figures, adding 17 points to go along with eight rebounds. The Blue Hens shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55).
With its road trip complete, Gardner-Webb will take time off for Christmas before playing a pair of games to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Runnin' Bulldogs will welcome Converse College to Paul Porter Arena on Saturday, December 29 (3 p.m.) before traveling to Western Carolina on Wednesday, January 2 for a 7 p.m. tip.
