ATHENS, Ga – The Gardner-Webb swimming program had a strong day at the first day of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) championships on the campus of the University of Georgia, setting new school records and earning podium finishes.
The women kicked off Session I with a third-place showing in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. Freshman Jessi Snover teamed up with three seniors – Lili Toth, Kelsey Williams and Lauren Oglesby for a time of 7:26.07, less than 20 seconds behind winner Liberty.
In the final women's event of the opening session, the 200 Yard Medley Relay, Gardner-Webb's A team of Williams, Snover, Lara Siebrecht and Whitney Peters came in sixth, completing the race in 1:43.15. The Runnin' Bulldogs foursome finished only five seconds behind the Flames of Liberty, which won the event with a sub 1:40 time (1:38.34).
"It was a great opening session for both our teams," said head coach Mike Simpson. I'm proud of Lara (Siebrecht) for shattering her school record in a time trial for the 200 Yard Backstroke and making her first NCAA B cut. It was outstanding for our ladies to have a podium finish in the 800 Yard Freestyle. The team set a school record, beating the old one by more than five seconds."
After two events, the Gardner-Webb women earned 102 points and currently sit in fifth place. The Runnin' Bulldogs trail University of Incarnate Word (206 points), Georgia Southern (203), Florida Gulf Coast (190) and Liberty (170). Following the Runnin' Bulldogs are Campbell (100), UNCA (94), Howard (54) and the University of North Florida (46).
The Gardner-Webb men got off to a stellar start in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a third-place effort. Garrett Simpson, Jordan Mintz, Seggio Bernardina and Zach Dingfield swam the event in 1:30.21, less than 0.5 second behind second-place Incarnate Word (1:29.75) and 1.27 seconds behind winner Old Dominion University. The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded 42 points with their third-place finish.
"The guys swam a great race," Simpson stated. "The splits were outstanding, and we gained valuable points.
In the 800 Yard Freestyle, the 'Dogs 'A' team was disqualified to an early start, but the B team of Cullen Fields, Peter Wakeley, Cameron Pou and John Baker finished the event in 6:50.66. Incarnate Word won the race.
"We jumped by just hundredths of a second," Simpson said, "but we once again had some solid splits and we are looking forward to a great conference meet after a solid first day in the pool."
The Gardner-Webb men ended day one in seventh place with 32 points. The Old Dominion Monarchs sit atop the leaderboard with 134 points.
The Runnin' Bulldogs men and women's squad will look to improve their standing tomorrow. The day begins at 10 a.m. with preliminaries, while finals are scheduled to take place beginning at 6 p.m. The women's 500 Yard Freestyle Relay will kick off Thursday's finals, with the men's race to follow.
