
Swimming Teams in Top Five After Day Two of CCSA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – The Gardner-Webb swimming programs had an outstanding day on the second day of the CCSA championships, with the men winning the 200 Yard Freestyle, while the women recorded several strong finishes.
"We had a fantastic finals tonight," said head coach Mike Simpson. "The night was capped off by a huge victory in the men's 200 Freestyle Relay. Eli (Coan), Zach (Dingfield) and Seggio (Bernardina) jumped out front early, and Mason (Hutchinson) did a great job securing the victory. Mason has the heart of a champion; he has battled through injuries this season and gutted things out.
Mason Hutchinson and Chase Mattingly started the night off for the men with fourth and sixth-place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle race. Justin Conklin came home sixth in second men's race of the evening, the 200 Yard IM, while Joshua Clarke finished ninth.
Eli Coan and Zach Dingfield both found themselves on the podium at the end of the 50 Yard Freestyle, with Coan finishing in 20.38, just 0.03 seconds behind the winner. Dingfield completed the race in 20.49.
The final men's competition of the night, the 200 Yard Freestyle, saw Gardner-Webb earn the victory, its first of the conference meet. Coan, Dingfield, Seggio Bernardina and Hutchinson earned the team 40 points by finishing in 1:21.63.
Through 15 events, the men are in fourth place with 167 points. University of Incarnate Word (324) sits atop the leaderboard, followed by Old Dominion (305) and Florida Atlantic (210).
The women started off the day with the 500 Yard Freestyle finals, which saw Lauren Oglesby finish 12th with an overall time of 4:58.08. In the ladies second final of the night, Jessi Snover earned a podium finish, coming home third (2:02.69) less than one second behind the winner, Liberty's Prudence Rooker.
Audrey Robinson earned two points for the Gardner-Webb women in the 500 Yard Freestyle, while the Runnin' Bulldogs' 200 Yard Freestyle Relay squad came home in sixth, earning 48 points with a time of 1:34.11. The team was just 0.01 second behind fifth place and under five seconds off the winner's pace.
"Kelsey Williams, Tessa Walsh, Audrey Robinson and Lili Toth gave a great effort in the 200 Yard Freestyle," said Simpson. Our distance teams had a great evening."
The GWU women sit fifth of eight teams after the second day of action. The Runnin' Bulldogs have accumulated 259 points, with the Flames of Liberty University in first (582 points). Florida Gulf Coast (552), Georgia Southern (346) and University of Incarnate Word (306) are second through fourth respectively.
Day three begins Friday, February 16 with prelims at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m. on the campus of the University of Georgia.
