
Swimming Completes Strong Third Day at CCSA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Thanks to multiple podium finishes on day three of the Costal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) championships, the Gardner-Webb men's swim team is in third place, while the women are in fifth.
"We talked this morning about riding the momentum of last night's relays into the prelim session today, and we did just that with a fabulous morning," said head coach Mike Simpson. "The challenge then became how to be even better in the night session, and the group met the challenge. It was incredible to watch great swim after great swim."
Jessi Snover started things off for the Gardner-Webb women with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly finals, swimming the event in 54.05, just 0.03 seconds out of fourth. Snover also set a school record in the 100-yard fly prelims.
In the 400-yard IM, London Schumacher found herself on the podium in a key race, finishing third with a time of 4:19:58 to earn 27 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Lili Toth swam to a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and completed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.43, which was the eighth-fastest time of the race.
In the final women's event, the 400 medley relay, GWU came home third with a time of 3:43.70. The relay team consisted of Lara Siebrecht, Anna Banick, Snover and Toth.
After three days of swimming, the Runnin' Bulldogs sit in fifth place in women's competition. Florida Gulf Coast (1152 points) leads the way, followed by Liberty (1078), Georgia Southern (628), University of Incarnate Word (528.5), Gardner-Webb (567), Campbell (480), UNCA (429), North Florida (199.5) and Howard (189).
In men's action, the 'Dogs took two of the top three spots in the 100-yard Butterfly as freshmen Seggio Bernardina (48.28) and Cullen Fields (48.41) finished second and third respectively. The duo earned the men's squad a total of 33 points.
In the 100-yard backstroke, John Baker was the Runnin' Bulldogs highest finisher with a fifth-place effort. Mason Hutchinson came home fourth in the 200-yard freestyle
Baker, Jordan Mintz, Bernardina and Coan competed for Gardner-Webb in the In the 400-yard medley relay, earning 32 points and finishing third in just 3:17.62.
Thanks to a strong performance, the Gardner-Webb men have accumulated 412.5 points and trail only Incarnate Word (592) and Old Dominion (503) thus far. Florida Atlantic (352.5), NJIT (161), Howard (144) and Mount St. Mary's (131) round out the field heading into Saturday's action.
"We had a pair of great 400 medley relays to end with some huge momentum heading into Saturday," stated Simpson.
The championships will conclude Saturday with the day kicking off at 10 a.m. from the University of Georgia.
