
Gardner-Webb Men and Women's Swim Teams Finish Third at CCSA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Multiple podium finishes on the final day of the CCSA Championships helped the men and women's swim teams finish third overall.
"What an incredible four days," stated head coach Mike Simpson. "Tonight we topped it off with Lauren Oglesby winning her third title in the mile and the men's team taking an incredibly exciting victory in the 400-freestyle relay.
In women's action, Oglesby opened the final day of swimming by taking first-place and standing atop the podium following the 1650-yard freestyle race. The senior from Woodstock, Georgia, turned in a time of 16:41.34. Kelli Croft (sixth) and Morgan VanderSchaaf (eighth) recorded top-ten finishes, while Kate Arceneaux finished 13th.
In the 200-yard backstroke finals, the Gardner-Webb ladies earned another podium finish as Lara Siebrecht took second-place (1:58.16). Mary Traylor (2:02.65) finished 10th overall, while Spencer Lucas (13th) and Hope Saunders (22nd overall) also competed. Siebrecht made an NCAA B-cut.
In the women's 100-yard freestyle, Kelsey Williams led the 'Dogs with a 21st-place finish and a time of 52.63. In the 200-yard breaststroke, GWU had a trio of swimmers compete. Lili Toth finished 12th, while Whitney Peters and Anna Banick came home 14th and 17th respectively.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took four of the top ten spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with Tessa Walsh (1:59.54) leading the way in fifth. Walsh's finish helped her set a school record and make an NCAA B-cut. Jessi Snover (6th), London Schumacher (9th) and Traylor (10th) also earned top-10s. Carol Zangla (2:07.75) finished 20th.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the GWU women earned 52 points. Williams, Blake Broullire, Snover and Toth swam the race in 3:25.70.
In men's action, Peter Wakeley and Chase Mattingly started the day with strong showings in the 1650-yard freestyle final. Wakely took fifth, with Mattingly recording the seventh-fastest time.
In the 200-yard backstroke, John Baker continued his solid conference meet with a sixth-place finish. Baker's teammates, Chris Raymond and Garrett Simpson finished 11th and 15th overall.
The men earned their first podium finish of the night in the 100-yard freestyle thanks to Zach Dingfield. Dingfield earned the final spot on the podium with his time of 44.95, which was good enough for third-place. Eli Coan (fourth) and Seggio Bernardina (seventh) recorded top-10s. Cameron Pou and Joshua Clarke tied for 15th, both completing the event in 47.02.
Jordan Mintz earned the Gardner-Webb men their second consecutive podium finishing by coming home third in the 200-yard breaststroke. Justin Conklin recorded a top-five, finishing fifth, while Austin Toney, and Brendan Teeters also competed, placing eighth and 11th.
Cullen Fields helped the team record an incredible third straight race with a swimmer on the podium thanks to his third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. The freshman from Marietta, Georgia swam the event in 1:49.06. John O'Connell (1:50.40) came home eighth, and Mason Hutchinson (1:51.17) finished ninth. Andrew Knudsen (1:51.27) narrowly missed out on a top-10 with an 11th-place finish.
The foursome of Coan, Bernardina, Dingfield and Conklin finished the night with a victory in the 400- yard freestyle relay. The group swam the event in 2:58.99, holding off Incarnate Word.
"It was an incredible season and a fantastic conference championship," noted Simpson.
Over the four-day meet, the men recorded 646.5. points en route to a top-three finish. Incarnate Word won the men's crown. The women earned a total of 904.5 points and finished third, while the Florida Gulf Coast University won the women's championship.
