CHARLESTON, S.C. – Carley Plentovich and Ky'Asia Stanford tied their career highs in scoring and Tierra Huntsman recorded a double-double to lead Gardner-Webb to a 75-59 win over Charleston Southern in Big South Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (17-9, 7-7 Big South) picked up its third straight victory, making 23-of-58 attempts (39.7 percent) from the floor, as well as a season-high 21-of-26 from the free throw line. Charleston Southern (10-15, 5-9 BSC) was held to a 20-of-58 performance (34.5 percent) and was just 1-of-13 from long distance.
Plentovich had 24 points, followed by 18 from Stanford to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs in scoring, each matching their previous career bests. Tierra Huntsman had 13 points and 12 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season.
Ke'Asia Jackson had 22 points to lead Charleston Southern offensively, while Weknyne Dumorne had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took control of the contest early, going on an opening 15-4 run, capped by a three-point basket by Alexus Hill with 4:25 on the clock. GWU led by as many as 15 points in the first period, and led CSU by a 23-12 score at the end of the quarter.
Charleston Southern would pull within five points at 25-20 with 7:21 to go in the second period after a mid-range basket by Jackson, but GWU would outscore the Buccaneers by a 14-5 margin throughout the remainder of the period to lead by 14 points, 39-25, at the half.
CSU would again close the gap to five points late in the third period on a basket by Jackson with 1:56 remaining, but Plentovich would knock down a basket from long distance on Gardner-Webb's next possession to give the 'Dogs an eight-point edge that the would hold at the end of the frame.
Free throws proved to be a huge factor in the fourth period, as Gardner-Webb would knock down 15-of-20 opportunities at the charity stripe, while CSU only had four attempts from the line, making three.
