BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Jim Corn's Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs women's tennis squad returned home to the friendly confines of Boiling Springs Tuesday afternoon, but ultimately dropped a 5-2 decision to Queens University of Charlotte.
"Congratulations to Queens," said Corn. "They came ready to play and were scrappy. They're a good team; they're well coached and played better than us today. We'll continue to work hard, correct errors and be mentally tougher."
The Royals swept the three doubles matches to clinch the point and take a 1-0 lead over the home team heading into the six singles matches.
Gardner-Webb won two of six singles contests, but it wasn't enough as the Runnin' Bulldogs suffered a 5-2 defeat.
At No. 4 singles,
Miljana Ristic defeated Queens' Caroline Nielsen in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Immediately follow Ristic, freshman
Valentine Limauge was victorious in her match in the No. 5 position. The Brussels, Belgium native won the first set, 7-5, before defeating the Royals' Hannah Lehfeldt in set two, 6-3.
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 1-5 overall. The Royals improve to 2-0 overall.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will take more than a week off before traveling to nearby Spartanburg, South Carolina to face the Wofford Terriers. The match between GWU and Wofford is set for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1.
