BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis squad bounced back from a pair of weekend defeats, topping Appalachian State, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon.
"We played good enough to win and worked hard," said head coach
Mike Griffith. "We played last week and lost against Campbell and Virginia Tech despite being competitive. I knew today we would play at a high level, and I'm proud of the team. It was a team effort. We are in great physical and mental shape right now."
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-8) played at the high level that Griffith expected, clinching the doubles point and starting the match with momentum. Gardner-Webb won two consecutive doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead.
Maximilian Scholl and
Millen Hurrion won at No. 1 by a 6-2 score, while
Ross Gilbert and
Breno Plentz clinched the point with a 7-6 (6) victory at No. 3.
In singles play, Plentz began the action for the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5 before Hurrion was victorious at No. 2 in straight sets. After Appalachian State (7-4) earned the win at No. 1,
Johan Fors battled for a three-set victory, clinching the match for Gardner-Webb with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2 win in the No. 6 position.
Adam Schmidt was the final Runnin' Bulldog to win his match, winning at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5.
The team will play its second straight home contest when it faces off against Big South Conference opponent Winthrop on Friday, March 2, at 2:30 p.m.
