Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Runnin’ Bulldogs Fall on the Road, 63-55, to Campbell Tuesday Night

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A 12-1 run by Campbell in the final minutes of the fourth period slowed down the Runnin' Bulldogs, as Gardner-Webb dropped a 63-55 decision to the Camels in a key Big South Conference matchup on Tuesday evening.

Gardner-Webb (18-11, 8-9 Big South) tied the game at 50-50 with 2:39 to go in the final period on a mid-range basket by Tierra Huntsman, capping a 6-0 run.

Campbell (15-13, 8-9 Big South) snapped the run on its next possession as Ashlyn Hampton knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:05 on the clock, followed by a steal by Micaila Coleman and fast break layup by Alyshia Allison to give the Camels a four-point lead with 1:44 to go.

Huntsman was sent to the free throw line with 1:27 remaining, where she knocked down one of two attempts to set the score at 54-51, yet the Camels scored eight unanswered points to build an 11-point lead at 62-51 with 18 seconds left in the game.

GWU trimmed its deficit to single digits on a Huntsman layup with 12 seconds left, but there was not enough time on the clock for a comeback as the team would go on to fall by eight points, 63-55.

Alexus Hill led all scorers on the evening with 17 points, knocking down six of her twelve attempts from the floor.  Huntsman added 12 points on a 4-of-13 performance, with all points coming in the second half.

Summer Price, who had 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting, led Campbell offensively.

With the loss, Gardner-Webb is tied with Campbell and Presbyterian for fifth-place in the Big South Conference standings with one game remaining in the regular season.  Due to tiebreakers, the Runnin' Bulldogs would currently finish in seventh-place and would play in the opening round of the Big South Women's Basketball Championships, as the top-six seeds receive a bye to the quarterfinals.

The Runnin' Bulldogs wrap up the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday, March 3 at UNC Asheville.  Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm with game coverage provided by the Big South Network (www.bigsouthsports.com).
