February 28, 2018 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the third time this season, Weymouth, England native and Gardner-Webb freshman Millen Hurrion was honored by the Big South Conference as the men's tennis Freshman of the Week.
"Finding someone who can play at No.1 or No. 2 singles their freshman year is somewhat unheard of, especially at a smaller school," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We expect him to continue to get better; he's very coachable and has a great game. His habits from dieting to sleeping and physical preparation have gotten better and better."
Last week, Hurrion went 2-0 at No.1 doubles with partner Maximilian Scholl and was tied 4-4 in a doubles contest at Virginia Tech that went unfinished. The duo began the week with a 6-3 victory over Limestone College, before winning 6-4 in the Runnin' Bulldogs first Big South match of the year at Campbell.
In singles action, Hurrion went 2-1 at No. 2 singles. He won in three sets against Limestone's Sacha Terrizzano, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, before falling in a three-set match at Campbell. Against Virginia Tech, Hurrion rebounded to defeat the 117th-ranked player in the country, Jason Kros, in two sets, 6-4, 6-3.
For the year, he has won six singles matches, including one in the No. 1 position and five in the No. 2 slot. Hurrion has been victorious in doubles play five times – on three occasions with Scholl and twice with Adam Schmidt.
The 'Dogs next match is scheduled for Friday, March 2, against BSC foe Winthrop University. The contest between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Eagles will take place at 2:30 p.m. in Boiling Springs.
