BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb made just 30.6 percent of its baskets, while Radford made 53.3 percent of its attempts from the floor as the Runnin' Bulldogs dropped a 66-46 decision to the Highlanders in Big South Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (14-8, 4-6 Big South) made just 15 of its 49 attempts throughout the afternoon, including a 2-of-11 performance from long distance. Radford (14-7, 7-3 Big South) was an efficient 24-of-45 from the floor, as well as 8-of-17 from behind the three-point line.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had a pair of double-digit scorers, led by
Carley Plentovich with 13 points on a 3-of-8 performance. She also was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Ky'Asia Stanford added 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, and was also perfect from the charity stripe, knocking down all four attempts.
Claudia Quevedo led the Highlanders offensively, scoring 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting, with all of her attempts coming from behind the three-point line.
Gardner-Webb scored the opening basket of the contest on a mid-range jumper by
Ky'Asia Stanford with 9:40 on the clock, but the Highlanders put up six unanswered points over the next 1:47 to hold a 6-2 lead with 7:57 left in the period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would break the run with 6:37 to go on a layup by Stanford, but would go 0-for-6 from the floor for the remainder of the quarter to trail the Highlanders by a 10-4 score.
Radford expanded its lead to ten points at 14-4 with 7:45 left in the second period after a basket by Jayda Worthy, but GWU would answer on its next possession, ending its scoring drought on a three-point basket by
Tierra Huntsman.
That sparked a 10-3 run by the Runnin' Bulldogs that trimmed their deficit to 17-14 with 3:45 left in the half, yet the Highlanders outscored GWU by a 10-6 margin throughout the remainder of the period to take a 27-20 lead at halftime.
Radford would seize control of the game in the third period, outscoring Gardner-Webb by a 22-10 margin while holding the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 3-of-16 performance during the frame to lead by nineteen points, 49-30, as play headed to the final period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the fourth period with a quick 4-0 run, but Radford would follow with a 15-3 run to build a 27-point advantage with 3:42 left. GWU closed the game on a 9-2 run, but would fall by a twenty-point margin at 66-46.
